Lee Jordan has given me unrealistic expectations for sports commentary
This is a brilliant moment.
Here we have Kaylee, a mechanic who is not afraid to get a little (or a lot) of grease on her. She lives a pretty rugged life, but you know what? She also loves pretty, frilly things.
Joss could have taken her down the “I’m a tomboy and I scoff at your girly-things” route, but he didn’t. Instead he took her character and said hey, it’s okay to like engines and like pretty frilly things. You don’t have to give up one because it doesn’t fit in with the stereotype of the other.
THIS is the type of message TV should be sending; that you should never change an aspect of yourself just because you don’t fit into a stereotypical box.
She also gets to be both the cute younger sister character for Mal, and be happily sexual, into the hunky doc and never shamed for it.
except by Jayne who is immediately shut down any time he says something inappropriate about her
there was a post I liked earlier but I didn’t reblog it because I’m a dingdong
about “Captain America That Fox News Doesn’t Know What To Do With” who actively speaks out for welfare, marriage equality, raising the minimum wage, trans rights etc. etc
and one part pointed out that he uses his privilege and platform to bring attention to issues and then get outta the way to let others speak on said issues
which makes me think of Steve going onto talk/news shows like
"Ah, Captain, welcome to the show. So you’re here to talk to us about the homelessness trend among LGBT youth, yes?"
"Thank you for having me. And yes: It’s an incredibly important issue. These are young people who need to be kept safe and protected, and there needs to be more visibility on the matter."
"Which is why I’ve brought a representative from the National Center of Transgender Equality on the show with me so she can speak on the subject."
"…Uh, Captain, I think our viewers were expecting-"
"A much more qualified spokesperson than me, I’m sure! But they don’t have to worry. That’s why I’ve invited her today."
and then he just sits
while the person talks
smiling politely and listening intently
and thanks them at the end of his time slot
And they try and protest but there were Papers and Contracts signed that said that Steve could technically do whatever he wanted on the show, which includes letting someone else speak for him, and the Avengers and their publicity team have got Hella Lawyers on their side (Jen Walters, offscreen, winks and gives Steve a thumbs up) and they literally cannot do anything about it
and he keeps doing it
and it’s awesome and raises web traffic and visibility for causes a heck of a bunch and it’s great
